SAN PEDRO : Plan Would Put Lights on Vincent Thomas Bridge

Next year, the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro could be aglow with lights if a plan proposed by a Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday wins final city approval.

Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr. of San Pedro said the Vincent Thomas span will serve as the city’s “welcoming monument,” much like the Golden Gate in San Francisco and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

“This has been a labor of love for the community, a labor of love by all those who have touched this project,” Svorinich told the Arts, Health and Humanities Committee.

San Pedro business and community leaders have been pushing to have the bridge lighted since 1987. Residents have raised $35,000, or nearly 10% of the $358,000 project’s cost. The rest of the funding will come from the city treasury and a $100,000 donation from a Downtown Los Angeles investment firm. The committee sent the plan to the full council for final approval in two weeks.

The bridge, erected in 1963, connects San Pedro with Terminal Island.
