Oxnard police arrested two youths Tuesday on suspicion of murder in the shooting death Thursday of 14-year-old Gabriel Alcazar Jr.

One suspect, a 16-year-old African American male, was already being held in the Ventura County juvenile hall for unrelated incidents when police determined his alleged involvement in the shooting near Oxnard High School.

The other suspect, a 17-year-old African American male, was traced to Fresno and arrested without incident there, according to police reports. Police suspect he pulled the trigger in what they say is a gang-related shooting. The youth was en route Tuesday to the county’s juvenile hall.

Witnesses said Alcazar was gunned down in an alley less than a block from his central Oxnard home, an incident that police say was an explosion of tension between Latino and African American gangs. The death shocked residents and prompted an outpouring of grief and anger.
