Los Angeles police said Thursday that they probably will not seek charges against a man who shot and killed an alleged robber Wednesday night.

Sgt. Greg Meyer said a car pulled up behind Mark Bustamante, 32, about 9:50 p.m. as he was taking groceries, a gym bag and a .38-caliber pistol out of his car trunk near his home in the 1300 block of South Ogden Drive in the Mid-City area.

A man, whom police later identified as a Ramon Munoz, 29, hopped out of the car, drew a gun and said something to Bustamante in Spanish, Meyer said. Bustamante shot Munoz, who died at the scene. Although at least three shots were fired, Munoz was hit once in the upper body, police said.

Meyer said Munoz’s gun was recovered.

“Right now there is no indication that there was any wrongdoing,” Meyer said. “It looks like a self-defense case.”

Police said they are seeking other suspects who sped off in a late-model Toyota Celica after Munoz was shot. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is reviewing the case.

Bustamante was questioned and released shortly after the shooting, police said.
