UNTANGLE THIS ONE: At CBS’s “60 Minutes,” spokeswoman Wendy Serkin says correspondent Steve Kroft “is as good as they come in explaining complicated issues on television.” . . . He’d better be: Tonight, in the highly acclaimed news magazine’s lead story, Kroft takes on the Orange County bond crisis. It’s a general piece about failure of derivatives, Serkin explains, but adds, “you can bet Orange County is a prominent part of it.”

SPENDING TO SAVE: With Buena Park investing $28 million in the county’s bond pool, its council members cringe at taking on any new expenditures. But here’s an item they couldn’t live without: They recently approved $8,000 for equipment and personnel to handle the years of litigation the bankruptcy promises to bring. . . . Says City Manager Kevin O’Rourke: “The inundation of paper has been just incredible. Each week I hope this will be the worst week and then it just gets to be more.”

CAPITAL MUSIC: It’s a busy time in Washington for conductor William Hall and his Costa Mesa-based Master Chorale. . . . The chorale plays Thursday night at Constitution Hall as part of a “Gala Performance” at the American Choral Directors Assn. convention. Hall was asked if his group would mind adding a second performance on Friday at the Kennedy Center. . . . If you’re waiting for the Master Chorale to appear closer to home--it’s May 20, at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, with “War Requiem.”

PUT IT ON THE MAP: The National Ballet of Senegal hopes to put the West African country on the map for dance fans with an eight-performance run--opening Tuesday at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. . . . It’s the only Southern California stop on the troupe’s first U.S. tour since 1988. Mamadou M. Seck, the Senegalese ambassador to the United States, is coming to Irvine for the opening performance. . . . Seck’s one request, say representatives: He wants to spend time with some UC Irvine students.
