Son Sought, Friend Held in Slayings of Wealthy Fresno Family in 1992

Police searched Saturday for the only survivor of a wealthy family that was murdered three years ago, saying that desire for his parents’ multimillion-dollar estate may have been the motive for the three slayings.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested the surviving son’s onetime college roommate in connection with the Easter Sunday murders.

Fresno County sheriff’s deputies have issued an all-points bulletin for Dana Ewell, whose parents and sister were shot to death April 19, 1992, after they returned to their home from a holiday trip. Deputies again searched the Ewell home even though it had been searched at great length after the killings.

Joel P. Radovcich, 24, a former roommate of Dana Ewell’s at Santa Clara University, was booked into Fresno County Jail on Friday on three murder counts. He was ordered held without bail.

Detectives say the motive for the killings was the family estate, which had an estimated value of $6 million to $8 million. The father, Dale Ewell, owned a company that sold small airplanes.

In addition to Dale Ewell, 59, the victims were his wife, Glee, 57, and their daughter, Tiffany, 24.

Dana Ewell, who was with his girlfriend’s family at the time of the killings, posted a $50,000 reward for the arrest of the killers.
