Orange County Almanac

The McCoy Hare house, built in 1873 by Westminster’s first pharmacist, Dr. Jas. McCoy, is considered an Orange County landmark.

But in the past few years it has become the subject of a political battle. Differences between some leaders of the Westminster Historical Society and the City Council have derailed efforts to move the house to Blakey Park, where other historic buildings are located. The council will take up the issue again later this year.

In 1912, it was the home of the noted educator Marie Hare, who was born in the Westminster colony in 1890.
