COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Vail’s Homer Run Helps The Master’s Win, 11-1

Mark Vail hit a two-run home run in the third inning to help The Master’s College end a three-game losing streak Tuesday with an 11-1 victory over Occidental in a nonconference baseball game at Occidental.

Vail, a senior, finished with three hits. Catcher Jim Young added a double and his second home run of the season for Master’s (9-6).

Bryan Dowhower (1-1) went the distance, striking out five and walking two in the first complete game by a Master’s pitcher this season.

Oxnard 14, Ventura 11--Matt Anderson had three base hits, including two doubles and four runs batted in for the Condors in a Western State Conference game.

Anderson had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning as the Condors (12-5, 1-1) scored seven runs.

Oxnard’s Art Bolen, Rick Garcia and Chuck Harrington each had two hits, while Jake Spahr added four RBIs.

Ventura is 7-4-1, 1-1.

Pierce 7, Canyons 3--Brian Shaw hit his first homer but the Cougars (2-1, 6-11) fell to the Brahmas (3-0, 7-10) at Valencia.

Glendale 13, Mission 7--Steve Mikesell had three hits and four RBIs as the Vaqueros overcame five errors in a WSC South Division victory.

Nate Baze added three hits and a run batted in for Glendale (7-6-1, 1-1). John Toven had a double and a home run for Mission (4-13, 0-3).

Valley 3, Bakersfield 3--In a WSC game called because of darkness after 11 innings, the Monarchs scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Eric Norante’s two-run single.

Valley had runners at second and third with none out and with runners at second and third, in the eighth, but did not score.

Chris Stell, John Shellabarger and Steve Zorn each had two hits for the Monarchs (4-9-2, 1-1-1).

Antelope Valley 10, Cerro Coso 1--Jesse Perez struck out six and walked one in a Foothill Conference victory at Cerro Coso.

Will Wallace had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs for Antelope Valley (8-5-1, 3-1).

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Bakersfield 81, Glendale 70, Valley 15--Isaac Turner won the 800 meters in 1 minute 57.8 seconds and teammate Jeremy Gump cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault for Glendale in the WSC meet.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 5, Westmont 2--The Matadors won five of seven singles before the match was called during doubles play because of darkness.
