Faculty Member of Year Chosen

Professor of physical education Barbara J. Wright was honored this month as Orange Coast College’s “Faculty Member of the Year” for 1994-95.

Wright, 51, is the fifth person to get the award presented by the college’s Academic Senate. A faculty member for 22 years, she teaches health and physical education. Wright also coached women’s gymnastics for 10 seasons, and was named “Coach of the Year” in 1982 and 1983.

The Los Alamitos resident has been a triathlete for more than a decade.

Couple Establish UCI Fellowship Fund

Peter and Joan Balsells, founders of Bal Seal Engineering in Santa Ana, have established a $250,000 fellowship fund at the UC Irvine School of Engineering. The fellowships will be awarded to engineering students who are citizens and permanent residents of Spain.

Peter Balsells came to the United States at age 18 from Catalonia in northeastern Spain, and earned a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He and his wife, an aeronautical engineer, formed Bal Seal in 1958. The company manufactures fluid seals.

IRVINE

Orientation for Spanish Course Set

An orientation for a four-week summer Spanish course in Costa Rica is scheduled for March 23 at Irvine Valley College. The class will house students with Costa Rican families from June 24 to July 23 while they study Spanish at the Central American Institute for International Affairs in San Jose.

People interested in the program must attend the orientation, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Community Education Building.

Saddleback Collects Speech, Debate Title

The Saddleback Community College District speech and debate team won the league championship at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensic Assn. spring tourney at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

It is the team’s fourth first-place award in seven events this school year.

OCC Apple Computer Club Wants Members

The Apple Computer Club at Orange Coast College is accepting new members, including beginning computer users. Club members exchange information with each other, and receive updates on various Apple products.
