Countywide : Host Families Sought for Russian Students

Share

Families who want to practice a little bit of local good will can house a Russian student for a month under the International Education Forum.

Fifteen Russian students will land March 20 in Orange County and need temporary shelter as they tour Southern California. A delay in processing student visa applications before the trip has forced forum organizers to scramble to find homes for the students.

Forum spokeswoman Lila Brumback said the students, who competed for the scholarships to study in the United States, “will arrive speaking English and (are) serious in their resolve to learn about America.”

During their stay, the Russians will visit area attractions like Disneyland and examine high-tech education programs at Aliso Viejo Middle School.

Students have their own spending money and insurance. Families that host other students for longer stays can earn a 20% scholarship for their own children to travel abroad on the home-stay program.

“The presence of international teen-agers in our schools and community enhances our education,” said Brumback, “and provides our youngsters the opportunity to develop friendships, which plant the seeds of future peace and understanding.”

Those interested in hosting the Russian students or getting more information about the program can call (714) 362-0810 or (800) 968-1977.
