BART Awards Contract to German Company: Morrison Knudsen Corp.’s troubled transit car business suffered another blow when it lost out on a bid to refurbish 439 transit cars for the San Francisco Bay area’s commuter rail system. Instead, the single largest contract in the history of BART--or Bay Area Rapid Transit district--was awarded to AEG Transportation Systems Inc., a unit of Germany’s Daimler-Benz AG, which bid $330 million for the contract. Boise, Ida.-based Morrison Knudsen had bid $469 million for the work.
