LOS ANGELES : Judge Backs Bank’s Refusal to Give Loan to Gay Worker

Share

A federal judge in Los Angeles has ruled against a gay bank official who claimed he was discriminated against when his company refused to give him and his partner a discounted home loan.

In a lawsuit filed on behalf of California Federal Bank Vice President Jeffrey Bagley, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund maintained that the bank’s refusal violated federal law barring discrimination on the basis of marital status, as well as state regulations prohibiting unfair business practices.

U.S. District Judge Mariana R. Pfaelzer rejected those arguments, granting summary judgment to the bank in a decision filed Friday. The bank said the two men were not eligible because they were neither married nor immediate family members.
