Lucille Moore; Feminist, Former San Diego County Supervisor

Lucille Moore, 68, a vocal feminist and the first woman on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors since the 1920s. She was elected to the board in 1976, and did much to assure gender equality in county policy and law. She was the first woman to wear pantsuits in the County Administration Building, a fashion quickly copied by younger employees. In 1982 she served as president of the San Diego County chapter of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Partly because of her feminist views, Ms. Moore failed to win reelection in her conservative district in 1984. Born in Kansas, she grew up in San Diego and worked for Pacific Telephone. She became intrigued with politics when she served on the board of the League of Women Voters in 1960. On her third try, she was elected to the El Cajon City Council.
