COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach State Rallies to Beat BYU in Baseball

Jeff Tagliaferri’s three-run home run in the seventh inning enabled Long Beach State to rally for a 5-3 victory over Brigham Young in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Blair Field.

Junior transfer Kyle Wilson picked up his fifth victory against no losses with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Gabe Gonzalez struck out five in the final two innings to earn his fourth save for the 49ers (11-8-1).

Cal State Fullerton baseball rained out--Cal State Fullerton’s baseball game against Gonzaga was postponed due to rain. The game is tentatively scheduled to be made up today as part of a doubleheader. The seven-inning make-up game will begin at 2 p.m. The regularly scheduled game will start half an hour later.

The top-ranked Titans defeated Gonzaga, 8-6, in Friday’s opener and have won four games in a row.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Fairfield (Conn.) 5, Southern California College 4--Quynh Le and Wendy Andel won their singles matches and teamed for an 8-4 doubles victory over Amy Hanson and Maureen Canuso of SCC (5-4).

Titan track meet canceled--With the exception of the men’s javelin event, the Titan Invitational track meet was canceled due to rain. Huntington Beach’s Matt Farmer, throwing for Spring Co. Track Club, finished second in the javelin with a distance of 191-8.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Stanford 3, UC Irvine 1--Mike Lambert had 33 kills and Matt Fuerbringer had 25 kills to lead third-ranked Stanford (11-3, 8-2) over UC Irvine, 15-9, 15-12, 13-15, 15-10. Leland Quinn had 25 kills and John Arata 18 for the Anteaters (7-7, 5-7).
