News, Tips & Bargains : Alaska Road Opens This Summer

Share

For the first time since its creation, the entire length of the Dalton Highway, otherwise known as the Alaska Pipeline Haul Road, will be open this summer from Livengood, Alaska, to the Arctic Ocean, the northernmost place accessible by car in North America.

The 417-mile road connects the blink-and-miss village of Livengood, which is above Fairbanks, to Alaska’s modern-day Klondike: the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. It cuts through millions of acres of wilderness that boasts spectacular scenery, but receives only a handful of visitors each year.

Be warned: This is no easy Sunday drive. The Dalton is a gravel road and rest stops and gas stations are few and far between. June, July and August offer the best traveling conditions. For a free brochure on the Dalton, write Bureau of Land Management, 1150 University Ave., Fairbanks, AK 99709-3844.
