Journalism Teachers Earn State Honors

Two local instructors recently received “Outstanding Journalism Teacher of the Year” awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.

The honorees are Cal State Fullerton’s Jeffrey Brody and Saddleback College’s J. Michael Reed.

Brody is faculty adviser for Cal State Fullerton’s Daily Titan newspaper, and Reed is the adviser for Saddleback’s Fore-n-Aft newspaper.

CYPRESS

Funding Benefits Living Skills Program

Cypress College was recently presented with a $32,300 award to fund its Independent Living Skills training program for foster teens and their adult care givers.

The funds were provided by the federal government and distributed by the California Community Colleges Foundation.

The program is designed to prepare foster youths to live independently and responsibly once they turn 18 and are no longer eligible for care through the child welfare system.

SADDLEBACK COLLEGE

Gay and Lesbian Groups to Convene

Student delegations from more than 15 Southern California colleges are expected to participate in the Gay and Lesbian Collegiate Conference at Saddleback College on April 29 at the Mission Viejo campus.

Events will include a self-defense workshop, a discussion on gays in the media, and tolerance workshops. Bruce Cohen, producer of “The Flintstones,” will be the featured speaker.

FULLERTON COLLEGE

Businesses Targeted by Recycling Team

A new program that encourages businesses to use recycled materials is being offered at the Anaheim Higher Education Center of Fullerton College.

This R-TEAM (California Recycling Business Assistance Team) program works with both start-up and existing businesses. Information is provided on the feasibility of using recycled materials, how to obtain permits and low-interest loans and how to develop business plans.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Seniors Gather on Campus March 28

More than 2,000 county high school seniors are expected to attend the 12th annual High School Senior Day from noon to 3 p.m. on March 28.

Participants will receive early registration materials for fall classes at Orange Coast College. Campus tours, counseling, orientation and financial aid information also will be available.
