ORANGE : Chapman Law School Gets Accreditation

Chapman University’s nascent law school has received approval from the West Coast’s main higher education accrediting agency, paving the way for classes to start in five months, officials said this week.

The Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges accredited the law school last week, Chapman spokeswoman Ruth Wardwell said. The accreditation association monitors programs at public and private colleges and universities in California and Hawaii.

Chapman administrators will now seek to have their law school approved by the American Bar Assn. If approved, it would be the first ABA-accredited law school in Orange County. Graduates of ABA-accredited law schools are eligible to join the bar in any state.

Officials recently selected a temporary site for the law school in Anaheim. After two years, the school will move to a permanent site, possibly near the main campus in Orange.

Eight full-time faculty members, a library director and an assistant dean were recently hired for the school, Wardwell said. Classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 21.
