Lake Hughes Users Can Solve Their Differences

Share

I am a Lake Hughes resident and read with interest your Feb. 21 story “Parted Waters.”

Is it your goal to look for something adversarial in every story? Here is a story hinged on the adversarial nature of those people who want peace and quiet and those who want raucous fun and good times.

Yes, there are people who want peace and quiet who are upset by those who make a lot of noise in the pursuit of fun, and yes, those who want to pursue fun and make a lot of noise while doing it are upset by those who would inhibit them. There are other people who inhabit this area, and people are not the only living things to inhabit this wildlife refuge.

A short time ago some young people came with two jet skis. They roared around this small lake at phenomenal speeds. They sought out flocks of ducks, scattering them, running some over. Since they were here, the bird population has decreased.

Twenty-three miles down the road is Lake Castaic. It is a large lake where jet skiing is fine, motorboating is fine, people can race around just as fast as they want and everyone has a good time.

Yes, everyone needs peace and quiet sometimes and everyone needs fun sometimes--but not fun at any price. Not fun at the cost of life forms, not fun at the cost of the environment.

It is probably possible for people to come together to solve some of these problems in ways by which everyone gets enough satisfaction. It just takes people coming together.
