An Oxnard man was killed and his wife injured in a single car accident early Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Juan Andres Castilleja, 26, was killed instantly when the Hyundai he was driving rolled 3 1/2 times shortly after 1 a.m. on Gonzales Road just west of Victoria Avenue, a CHP spokesman said.

Castilleja’s wife, Monica, 22, suffered a broken right leg and was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. She was in stable condition there early Saturday afternoon, a nursing supervisor said.

A CHP spokesman said the couple had been drinking before the accident occurred, but did not yet know whether that played a role in the crash.

A witness who was driving in front of the Hyundai told the CHP that Castilleja was traveling at approximately 60 m.p.h. and weaving erratically from side to side, the spokesman said.

Castilleja then swerved violently to the left, the car spun counterclockwise several times, rolled over and came to rest on its roof, the spokesman said.

Both Castilleja and his wife were wearing shoulder harnesses, but not their lap belts, the CHP spokesman said. Castilleja died of a broken neck.

The Highway Patrol said an investigation is continuing.
