LAGUNA HILLS : Council to Help Fund ‘Grad Night’

The City Council has agreed to donate $3,000 to support Laguna Hills High School’s drug and alcohol-free graduation night in June.

The council will spent about $500 more than last year on Grad Night, an on-campus celebration for seniors that offers an alternative to private parties where drugs and alcohol might be used.

The council donated the money in the name of Tracy Myers, Heather Zito and Brian Voight, three Laguna Hills High School students who died in a car crash on April 5, 1994.

Councilman Randal J. Bressette wanted to donate $3,400 to the event. However, Councilwoman Melody Carruth said the council already had several other charitable donations to make.

“We may be asked to donate $10,000 to Drug Use is Life Abuse,” she said. “We have to remember our other obligations.”

The school’s sixth annual Grad Night will be held June 22.

Grad Nights are increasing in popularity at schools throughout the state as a way to channel graduates’ exuberance into safe and sober activities.
