The San Fernando Valley Homeless Coalition, trying to reorganize after a yearlong hiatus, has planned a meeting next month with Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick.

“Our mission is to educate, advocate and empower the homeless,” said John Horn, the chairman of the coalition, which regrouped in July after it had been disbanded for a year.

Horn said that in recent months the group has been trying to recapture its former vitality and rebuild its membership.

“When you disband for a year, it takes a while to build back the momentum,” Horn said.

The coalition has a mailing list of about 70 members, mostly representatives of organizations that provide help and services for the homeless. Horn said the group hopes to expand and broaden interest in the homeless issue.

He said the group also expects the April meeting, and others like it, will lead to a valleywide conference on the issue, possibly this fall.

“It’s definitely a growing problem, especially since the earthquake,” said Horn, a caseworker at the Northeast Valley Health Corp. clinic at the Valley Shelter in North Hollywood.

The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. April 13 in the annex building at Church on the Way, 14424 Sherman Way, Van Nuys. For information, call Horn at (818) 765-8656.
