DANA POINT : Section of Coastal Highway to Reopen

Share

A section of Pacific Coast Highway that connects San Clemente and Dana Point should be reopened sometime during the first week of April, officials said Monday.

The one-mile stretch has been closed since a bluff collapsed during heavy rains a little more than two years ago. Finishing touches are being done on the $3.3-million project to rebuild the bluff and clear the highway.

“We’re within a maximum of two weeks away from opening the highway,” said Morton August, Dana Point’s director of public works and engineering services.

But August warned that any prolonged rain could delay the reopening date a few days because remaining work on the project cannot be done during wet weather.

The project was begun last July and officials had hoped it would be finished in January.

The February, 1993, bluff collapse sent 44,000 tons of dirt and debris onto the highway.

Four San Clemente houses on La Ventana were lost in the landslide and a fifth suffered significant damage.
