Marina High Senior a U.S. Scholar Finalist

Dylan Kar-Shuen Chan, a senior at Marina High School, is one of 2,600 candidates in the 1995 Presidential Scholars Program.

The candidates were selected from more than 2.5 million students expected to graduate this year from schools nationwide.

The candidates stand out because of their academic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. The White House will announce scholars in mid-April.

Chan, son of Shing-Ching and May Chan, holds a 4.6 grade-point average and plans to study biology, biochemistry or music in college. Chan, a pianist, has earned a number of awards for musical achievements.

College Orientation to Include Lunch

Seniors from Orange County high schools are invited to attend a college orientation Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m. at Orange Coast College.

Activities will include campus tours, English and mathematics placement tests, a panel discussion, a free barbecue lunch and musical entertainment.

There will also be information on fall registration, financial aid and college transfer programs. Last year, Orange Coast College ranked third out of the state’s 106 community colleges in the number of students who transferred to the University of California and California State University systems.

TUSTIN

Language Center Taking Applications

The Children’s Foreign Language Center will offer classes in Spanish, French and German twice a week beginning in September for children ages 4 to 10. Classes are held at Guin Foss School.

Tuition is $100 for one child per language and per semester for those registering early, and $125 after March 31.

Founded in 1960, the center is run by a nonprofit group with support from the Tustin Unified School District.

Computer Donation Deadline Extended

The Detwiler Foundation has extended the deadline for its Computers for Schools charity drive for Serra High School.

Through March 31, the foundation will donate a refurbished computer for every computer donated by businesses to the school. The donated computers must be in working order, have a hard drive, monitor and keyboard, be for academic use and come from businesses with fewer than 200 employees. Information: (714) 489-7216.
