NIT ROUNDUP : Freshman Stars Again for Marquette

Marquette returned to its past Wednesday night and found its future.

Freshman Aaron Hutchins provided the heroics off the bench for the third consecutive game, scoring 18 points and making a clutch three-point shot in overtime as Marquette beat South Florida, 57-50, in the third round of the NIT.

Marquette (20-11) advanced to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden on the silver anniversary of its only title in the tournament. South Florida finished 18-12.

Virginia Tech 64, New Mexico State 61--Center Travis Jackson made a three-point shot from the corner with 1.9 seconds left to lift the Hokies (23-10) past the Aggies (25-10) in a quarterfinal game at Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech squandered a 20-point lead in the second half before advancing to the semifinals against the winner of tonight’s Washington State-Canisius game.

Shawn Good scored 16 points for Virginia Tech, Troy Brewer 20 for New Mexico State.
