CS Northridge Tight End Accepts Scholarship to USC
Travis Hall landed on his feet.
Hall, who played tight end last season for Cal State Northridge, chose not to wait while the direction and future of the Matador football team was being settled by a student fee referendum. On Wednesday, he accepted a scholarship offer to play at USC.
Hall, a junior from Chaminade High, will redshirt next fall in accordance with NCAA transfer requirements. He has one year of playing eligibility remaining. He also was recruited by Nevada Las Vegas.
“I always knew in my heart I could play at a higher level,” Hall said.
Hall (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) was recruited as an H-back. He will line up in the slot or wing position, comparable to the way he was utilized at Northridge.
“I’m glad I left,” Hall said. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to go somewhere else. There were other guys who didn’t.”
Hall, who also played in the secondary for the Matadors, was one of Northridge’s best players last fall.
He caught 47 passes for 536 yards and three touchdowns and was a second-team selection in the American West Conference. His reception total ranked second in the conference.
Track and Field
Tannel House of Cal State Northridge, the Matadors’ leading performer in the women’s long jump and triple jump last year, will be a redshirt during the 1995 outdoor season due to a slow-healing hamstring injury that she sustained during an indoor competition earlier this year.
House, a senior from Fresno Hoover High, ranks seventh on the all-time Northridge list in both the long jump (20 feet 1/4 inch) and triple jump (39-10 1/2).
Softball

Baseball
Lonnie Potter and Shawn Peters have signed with the Antelope Valley Ravens, a team in the Independent Golden State Baseball League.
League officials have stated that play is scheduled to begin in June.
Potter, a first baseman from Palmdale High, was given his unconditional release by the San Francisco Giants in 1991. Peters is a shortstop who was an All-City Section selection at Crenshaw High in 1991.
The Men’s Senior Baseball League is seeking teams for the season that begins April 23.

Cal Lutheran (7-7) dropped from eighth to 24th in the latest NCAA Division III rankings issued by Collegiate Baseball magazine and the American Baseball Coaches Assn.
Basketball

Scott Squires, a member of the Cal Lutheran coaching staff for five seasons and the offensive coordinator for the last two, has been named wide receivers coach at Nevada Las Vegas.
Former Crespi High running back J.J. Lasley was waived by the London Monarchs of the World Football League.
Miscellany
Barry Smith, sports information director at Cal State Northridge, will resign his position at the end of the month to begin work at a public-relations firm in Westlake Village.
A replacement for Smith, 35, is expected to be named by the end of the school year.
