A 23-year-old Fillmore man was critically injured early Sunday after the car he was driving struck and sheared off a wooden utility pole in Piru, authorities said.
Jose Thomas Sanchez Casian was driving southbound on Center Street north of California 126 at high speed when he lost control of his car and struck a power pole, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The force of the collision at 1:45 a.m. sheared the pole off at its base and threw Casian, who was not wearing his seat belt, into the passenger’s side of the car. CHP officials said that after the pole was cut off, it fell back across Casian’s car.
Suffering major head and chest injuries, Casian was rushed to Henry Mayo Hospital in Santa Clarita, where as of 10 p.m. he remained in critical condition.
