From Associated Press

Anthony Mason came back for the New York Knicks on Sunday night in Tacoma, Wash., but it didn’t much matter.

His 10 points and 10 rebounds were of little help to a New York offense that failed to score 100 points for the eighth time in the past nine games, losing, 93-82, to the Seattle SuperSonics.

Gary Payton scored 26 points and made a career-best five three-point shots for the SuperSonics. Ten of those points came in the third quarter when Seattle outscored the Knicks, 27-12, to take control of the game.

It was the SuperSonics’ fourth consecutive victory and ended New York’s two-game winning streak.

Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 27 points, but only nine in the second half.

The Knicks were 4-1 in games without Mason, who was suspended by Coach Pat Riley for breaking team rules.

“I thought he played well,” Riley said. “He gave us some energy and played his game.”

Detlef Schrempf and Sam Perkins added 16 points each for Seattle.

Orlando 132, Golden State 98--Dennis Scott made four three-point baskets and scored 18 of his 32 points in the second quarter at Orlando as the Magic won its fourth in a row.

Sacramento 104, Minnesota 98--Mitch Richmond scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half, 13 of them in a 24-10 third-quarter run, to lead the Kings to a victory at Minneapolis. It was only the fifth victory in 20 games for Sacramento.

Denver 102, Portland 98--Reggie Williams scored nine consecutive points in the final 3:24, including a key tip-in with 30 seconds left in the Nuggets’ victory at Portland, which lost for the fourth time in five games.

NBA Notes

Only days after Reggie Lewis’ number was retired to the rafters of the Boston Garden, the banner has disappeared. The Celtics said the banner that held Lewis’ 35, along with Larry Bird’s 33, Kevin McHale’s 32 and Dennis Johnson’s 3, vanished Saturday night or Sunday morning.
