7 Quake Centers to Close at End of April

Another symbol of the Northridge earthquake is about to vanish.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that the seven Earthquake Service Centers established a year ago will close at the end of April.

“The work load has diminished,” said FEMA spokesman Len DeCarlo.

Last week, just over 100 people showed up at the centers, operated jointly by FEMA and the state’s Office of Emergency Services. About a year ago, DeCarlo added, at least 100 people a day came to the centers.

Still, after April, earthquake victims with questions about their aid applications and rental assistance may call the disaster Helpline at (800) 525-0321.
