NHL ROUNDUP : Jagr Scores Twice in Limited Play

Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and then was given the rest of Tuesday night off, probably because of Goal No. 2.

The two goals led the Penguins to a 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders in Pittsburgh, extending New York’s winless streak on the road to 13 games (0-11-2).

Both of the goals by Jagr, the league’s scoring leader, came in the third period: No. 24 on a breakaway at 4:10 and No. 25 at 12:48.

At 13:29 he was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for high-sticking Dennis Vaske, who was making sure there wouldn’t be a Goal No. 26.

Buffalo 5, Quebec 3--Coach John Muckler, serving a three-game suspension for hitting a fan, wasn’t around to enjoy his Sabres’ stopping the Nordiques’ four-game winning streak by taking a 5-1 lead in the game’s first 28 minutes at Buffalo.

Boston 5, Philadelphia 1--Bryan Smolinski and Adam Oates scored two goals each for the Bruins, who cooled off the Flyers and goalie Dominic Roussel at Boston.

Philadelphia was 9-1-1 in its previous 11 games, and Roussel had won his last five starts.

San Jose 6, Winnipeg 5--Jeff Friesen scored with 32 seconds to play in overtime for the Sharks, who rallied at home.

San Jose was behind, 3-1, then took a 5-4 lead. Igor Korelev’s goal with 47 seconds to play in regulation tied it for Winnipeg.

Dmitri Mironov will be lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs for at least a month because of a separated left shoulder. . . . Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets was suspended two games and Claude Lemieux of the New Jersey Devils three for separate incidents last weekend. . . . Florida Panther defenseman Keith Brown will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee and is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks.
