PREP BASKETBALL / SENIOR ALL-STAR TOURNAMENT : Sand, Fister Lead West to 90-87 Victory

Troy’s Jeff Sand and Sonora’s Chad Fister combined for 43 points to lead the West team to a 90-87 victory at the Orange County Senior All-Star boys’ basketball tournament in front of about 300 Friday night at the Bren Center.

Sand, named the most valuable player, scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, and Fister added 20 points and nine rebounds as the West, coached by Fountain Valley’s Gordon Billingsley, held off a fourth-quarter run by the South.

Down by as many as 23 points in the third quarter, the South, coached by Estancia’s Tim Parsel, outscored the West, 25-13, in the fourth quarter to pull within three in the closing seconds of the game.

Mike Campuzano, from Garden Grove, hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining to pull the South within three at 88-85, but after Fister scored with 35 seconds left, Trabuco Hills’ Jon Paisley missed a three-point attempt, which clinched the victory for the West.

Sand, who averaged 20 points for the Warriors this season and was an All-Freeway League first-team selection, led all scorers at halftime with 13 points. He also hit two key free throws with 1:01 remaining in the game to hold off the South.

The West was helped in the inside by Western’s Paul Lindenmeyer, who pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and added 10 points. Sonora’s Craig Clark grabbed 12 rebounds and had six points.

The South was led by St. Margaret’s guard Damian Raibon, who scored 17 points and blocked four shots in 20 minutes of play.
