COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Borders Gets Decision in SCC’s 11-7 Victory

Ila Borders won her first game in more than a year, pitching 5 2/3 innings as Southern California College beat Claremont-Mudd, 11-7, in a nonconference baseball game Friday in Costa Mesa.

Borders, a sophomore left-hander, gave up a run in the first and another in the fifth. Claremont-Mudd trailed, 4-2, but had the bases loaded and two outs when Borders was replaced by Kevin Withers, who got a fly out to end the inning.

SCC went on to score six runs in the sixth to break the game open. Borders (1-5) gave up seven hits, three walks, hit a batter and struck out two. Her collegiate record is 3-9 and two of the victories have come against Claremont-Mudd.

Ryan Seidel had two hits, including a home run, and scored three runs for SCC.

In Big West Conference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 9, UC Santa Barbara 6--Visiting Cal State Fullerton (27-5, 3-1) rallied for five runs in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. The Titans’ Tony Miranda had four hits, including his sixth home run. He scored four runs and drove in two.

Tony Martinez had two hits and drove in two runs for the Titans.

Long Beach State 9, New Mexico State 3--Jason Minici and Tim Falsken hit consecutive home runs in the sixth as visiting Long Beach State (17-11, 4-0) rallied from a one-run deficit. Kirk Pierce capped a four-run ninth with a two-run homer for Long Beach.

Kyle Wilson, a junior right-hander from Orange Coast, allowed nine hits and three runs, one earned, in seven innings for the victory. He is 7-2. Gabe Gonzalez gave up two hits and struck out two in two innings for his eighth save.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 3-2, Pacific 0-0--Amy Miner and Ashley Harmon each pitched complete-game shutouts for Long Beach State (19-16). Christy Tucker’s single in the sixth inning of the first game drove in all three runs in Game 1. In Game 2, Jennifer Dessert’s double to left in the fourth inning drove in Jessie Martinez, who singled to left. Both hits came with two outs. Pacific is 10-22.

In the Pacific Coast Golf Invitational:

UC Irvine finishes third--Steve Holmes of UC Irvine shot a one-ver 73 in the final round and finished in eighth place for the Anteaters, who were third among 23 teams in the 54-hole event played at Sandpiper golf course in Goleta.

San Jose State won the event with a total of 863. California (878) was second and Irvine (883) third. San Diego State (884) was fourth.

Aki Amaya, the Orange Empire Conference golfer of the year last season for Saddleback College, also shot 218 for San Diego State. Jesse Lanham of UC Irvine shot 77 Friday for total of 224 and a 28th place finish.

In the Cal State Hayward softball tournament:

Cal State Bakersfield 3, Chapman 0--Heidi Portugal (13-1) pitched a three-hitter to lead Cal State Bakersfield (28-2), top-ranked in Division II.

Leslie Gerbin went the distance with three strikeouts to lead Chapman to a 6-1 victory over Oregon Tech earlier in the tournament. Jessmine Maibin went six for eight in both games for Chapman (24-3), ranked third in Division III.
