Charter School Plan Isn’t Warranted
The move toward a charter school at Corona del Mar High School has baffled many parents who question if this radical step is necessary since SB 1448 was written for low socioeconomic, non-producing elementary schools.
Many are astonished that charter school organizers did not first try to present their goals and work them out with the principal, district administrators and trustees.
The trustees have embarked on a very aggressive plan to identify problems in the district and to implement changes to correct them.
For years, Corona del Mar (High School) has been widely recognized as an academically superior school, with Corona del Mar graduates being accepted by Ivy League schools.
The independent and truly objective evaluation given by the admissions staff at nationwide colleges speaks volumes for Corona del Mar.
Given the presence of three new members of the Board of Trustees, the maximum opportunities for input through any of the different task forces, and the numerous demands on everyone’s time, the formation of a charter school in Corona del Mar does not seem to be warranted now.
Precious time and resources should not be diverted from incremental changes which still need to be made in Corona del Mar.
