DANA POINT : City Panel to Meet on Altering Street Speed Limits

Share

City officials are calling for public comments on where to change the posted speed limits on city streets.

A recently completed traffic survey recommended 5 m.p.h. speed limit increases on two major roads in Dana Point. Residents will have their first opportunity to comment on the recommendations at a Traffic Improvement Commission meeting April 12 at City Hall.

“I encourage all interested citizens to attend the Traffic Improvement Commission meeting and provide us with their insight,” Public Works Director Mort August said. “This is their opportunity to express any concerns about speed limits.”

The survey, which is required by state law every five years, looked at 17 streets in the city. Most residential roads with a speed posting of 25 m.p.h. will be exempted from any increases.

City officials will consider boosting the speed limit on Coast Highway between Crown Valley Parkway and Niguel Road from 50 to 55 m.p.h.

Crown Valley Parkway from Pacific Coast Highway to Sea Island Drive also would see an increase from 35 to 40 m.p.h. and have a curve warning sign installed.

The survey recommended that the speed limit be decreased from 35 to 30 m.p.h. along Dana Point Harbor Drive from Street of the Golden Lantern to Cove Road.

The City Council will have final approval over speed limit changes, August said.
