Three replacement players impressed the Angels enough during spring training to earn assignments to the team’s triple-A affiliate in Vancouver, where they would be teammates of several 40-man roster players who were on strike for almost eight months.

Tony Mack, who went 1-2 with a 2.77 earned-run average, Darrel Akerfelds, who was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA, and infielder Jose Peguero, who hit .333 with eight runs batted in, were among 20 replacement players reassigned to the minors.

Catcher Doug Davis will return to his coaching duties at Class-A Lake Elsinore, and infielder Pete Coachman has been offered a position as scout in the Angel system. The 13 others on the 35-man replacement roster were released.

There has been much animosity between strike breakers and union members, but Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi said he would not tolerate any harassment of replacement players in Angel clubhouses.

“They’ve kept me from doing my job,” said reliever Troy Percival, who played the last two seasons at Vancouver and is trying to make the Angel bullpen. “I’d prefer they play in low A-ball somewhere.”

The Angels have a much higher opinion of the replacements. Six others, pitcher Mike Schooler and infielders Tyrone Boykin, Tom Redington, Fred Diaz, J.D. Ramirez and Joe Urso, were assigned to double-A Midland (Tex.), and pitchers Shawn Slade and Carlos Castillo, outfielders Chris Powell, Darrin Doty and Greg Shockey were assigned to Lake Elsinore.

Infielder Lance Robbins has been assigned to Class-A Cedar Rapids (Iowa), and pitchers Jon DeClue, Tony Fetchel and Dean Locklear, catcher Joel Smith and shortstop Allan Parker have been assigned to Visalia, a Class-A independent team in the California League.

Dion Beck, a former Cal State Fullerton pitcher who was released by the Angels, might return to become a batting practice pitcher for the Angels.

“I’m sure the big leaguers would like to get me out there without the (protective batting practice) screen,” Beck said. “If they’re going to be ticked off about it, maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea. I’ll discuss it with (Manager Marcel) Lachemann when they get back and see how he feels.”

The Angels invited seven non-roster players to spring training, including pitchers Shawn Boskie, Ken Patterson and Akerfelds.

However, Akerfelds will by mutual agreement report to Vancouver.

Also invited to camp were catchers Andy Allanson and Daniel Alzuaide, infielder Carlos Martinez and outfielder Steve Hosey.

Boskie, a right-hander, was 4-7 with a 5.06 ERA while splitting duty among three major league teams last season. He’s 23-36 lifetime in the majors.

Patterson has a 4-7 career record with five saves and a 3.88 ERA in 224 appearances. He tore a ligament in his left elbow in his lone appearance for California last year.

Allanson hit .261 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 40 games at Vancouver. Alzuaide batted .239 with 18 RBIs at class-A Mesa, Ariz., last season. Martinez, batted .244 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 80 games with Cleveland last year. Hosey hit .259 with 17 homers and 60 RBIs for Vancouver.
