PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP
In another Golden West League game:
Saddleback 9, Tustin 3--Carrie Mendoza was three for four with two RBIs, three runs scored and a double for Saddleback. Deana Guzman added two hits, with a double, a triple and three RBIs.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 3, Garden Grove 1--Trailing, 1-0, in the fourth inning, Pacifica Coach Rob Weil gathered his team in left field for a pep talk.
“It’s just a motivational-type speech I give when they aren’t doing what they should,” Weil said.
Inspired, Pacifica (13-1, 4-0) scored twice in the fourth and went on to win. The victory moved Pacifica into first place in league.
Garden Grove (10-4, 4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first, loading the bases with no outs on two singles and a fielder’s choice. A foul fly accounted for the first out, and Jenny Ramirez followed with a squeeze bunt. Pacifica first baseman Andrea Pickett fielded it cleanly and tossed it to catcher Tasha Sisco in time for the force, but the umpire ruled Sisco’s foot was not on the plate.
Garden Grove sophomore Kathy Moore looked as if she might make the run hold up, retiring the first nine she faced. However, Pacifica got it going in the fourth, when Val Downen singled and Autumn Gwinner drove her in with a fly-ball double. Gwinner scored on a ground ball by Pickett for a 2-1 Mariner lead. The Mariners would add to the lead an inning later when Downen singled to score Kristina Carlson.
Pacifica pitcher Toni Mascarenas was untouchable after the first inning. She gave up consecutive singles to open the game, but did not allow another hit, facing only one batter over the minimum in the final six innings to improve her record to 7-1.
