COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Get 17 Hits, Breeze Past Loyola

Jack Jones had three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 17-hit attack as Cal State Fullerton beat Loyola Marymount, 14-5, in nonconference baseball Wednesday at Titan Field.

Jones hit his first home run of the season off starter and losing pitcher Sandor Demosthenes (1-3) in the bottom of the fifth to tie it, 5-5. Robert Matols singled, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on Ruben Hernandez’s two-out double off reliever Jeff Cecchin.

Jones singled home a run in the sixth to make it 7-5 and then Mark Kotsay hit his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 9-5 in the seventh. The Titans scored five runs in the eighth on five hits, two walks and a Loyola error.

Kimson Hollibaugh (1-0) earned the victory in relief, his first in two seasons for the Titans. Scott Hild and Mark Chavez pitched the final three innings as Loyola got only two singles after the fourth inning.

The Titans (30-5) play host to Long Beach State in a three-game Big West series this weekend.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 8, Biola 1--Matthew Scott won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to lead SCC (12-2, 8-0).

In Mountain State Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

USC 3, UC Irvine 1--The Anteaters were no match for USC’s barrage of offensive shots, losing 11-15, 15-8, 15-1, 15-3.
