A Kids-Eye View

Photographs and stories by fifth-grade students who were given cameras to document other children’s lives are on display at The Gallery at 777 in Downtown through May 26.

The process of creating and exhibiting the work in “Kids View Kids: Faces and Places in the Neighborhood” was designed to boost the children’s self-esteem, said Francie Kugelman, gallery director.

“It was to help these children feel positive about themselves,” said Kugelman, who came up with the idea. “

One photograph from each student is on display, along with a story about the photograph.

Before the students began taking pictures, Kugelman visited their classrooms to teach them basic camera techniques using disposable cameras donated by Fuji.

Students participating in the project attend Main Street Elementary School in South-Central Los Angeles, Palms Elementary School in Palms and Washington Accelerated Learning Center in Pasadena.
