Mikael Renberg’s goal with 13:30 remaining in the third period lifted the Philadelphia Flyers to their fourth consecutive victory in beating the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

Eric Lindros, Renberg and John LeClair broke in 3-on-2 against the Canadiens. Lindros gained control in top of the Montreal zone and backhanded a pass through defenseman Yves Racine to a streaking Renberg. He tucked the puck just inside the goalpost for his 21st goal.

In their last 22 games, the Flyers are 15-5-2 and have outscored their opponents, 30-13, in the third period.

Philadelphia is 3-0-1 against the Canadiens this season. Montreal, which ended its two-game winning streak, is 1-11 in its last 12 road games.

N.Y. Rangers 3, Buffalo 1--Mike Richter returned to form as the Rangers beat the Sabres at New York.

Richter, knocked out of three consecutive home games and struggling through one of the toughest stretches of his career, displayed the goaltending form that helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup last season when he was 42-12-6.

Quebec 4, Boston 0--Peter Forsberg and Mike Ricci scored power-play goals 10 seconds apart late in the second period and goalie Stephane Fist had 36 saves as the Nordiques shut out the Bruins at Boston.

New Jersey 2, Washington 1-- Neal Broten’s power-play goal at 7:47 of the third period at Landover, Md., extended the Capitals’ losing streak to a season-high three games.

John MacLean skated down the right wing and stopped at the left goalpost, sliding a pass back to Broten, who was trailing the play. Broten, who beat goaltender Jim Carey to the glove side, has a point in eight of nine games since being dealt to New Jersey by Dallas.

Hartford 4, Ottawa 2--Jimmy Carson’s second goal of the game capped a third-period rally as the Whalers extended the Senators’ winless streak to 14 games (0-13-1) at Hartford, Conn. The loss officially eliminated Ottawa from playoff contention.

N.Y. Islanders 3, Florida 1--The Panthers’ playoff chances received another blow from Islander goalie Tommy Soderstrom, who stopped 38 shots at Miami.

On Saturday, Soderstrom held Florida to a 2-2 tie in a game in which the Panthers outshot New York, 43-37. This time, Florida had 39 shots to the Islanders’ 24, but Soderstrom was even tighter.

San Jose 3, Chicago 2--Jim Kyte scored on a sensational pass from Craig Janney with 5:31 remaining as the Sharks extended the Blackhawks’ winless streak to seven games at Chicago.

Arturs Irbe made 29 saves to win for only the second time since March 4. The Sharks won for the third time in four games despite being outshot, 31-14. Kyte scored on one of San Jose’s two shots in the third period.
