Eight young people on their way to a party were wounded by gunfire early Sunday in the San Fernando Valley’s second gang-related shooting in three days, Los Angeles police said.

A group of 10 youths was heading north on Haddon Avenue between Sunburst and Kamloops streets about 1:30 a.m. when a 17-year-old boy jumped out of a white station wagon and began firing a shotgun, police said.

His name was not released because he is a juvenile.

Eight of the young people were hit by the gunfire and were taken to various local hospitals. Some were seriously injured and one was in critical condition late Sunday, but all were expected to survive, police said.

Prior to the shooting, police said, the gunman had an argument with one of the people in the crowd over gang affiliation. “There had been a confrontation earlier,” Detective Frank Bishop said. The youth “who had a confrontation with someone in the group came back and shot into the crowd.”

Using the descriptions given by witnesses, police arrested the suspected gunman at his home Sunday afternoon. He was booked for investigation of attempted murder, Bishop said.

Witnesses said there may have been others with the gunman, but police have not identified any other suspects.

On Friday, two people were killed and two others wounded in a gang-related shooting in Van Nuys.
