MOORPARK : Texas Firm Seeks Local Trash Contract

Share

An international waste-disposal company will get a chance tonight to make its case to take over trash hauling in Moorpark.

The City Council will listen to Browning Ferris Industries, the nation’s second-largest trash hauler, argue to open bidding on hauling contracts now controlled by G.I. Rubbish and Anderson Disposal Co.

Those contracts expire in July, but were set for renewal pending closed-door negotiations with the companies.

BFI officials told council members at a meeting last month that Moorpark’s roughly 7,000 trash customers were paying inflated rates.

Early this month, Councilman Bernardo Perez asked that company officials be allowed to give a presentation to the full council.

The Texas-based company, which is worth more than $4 billion, has said that Moorpark could be its first foothold in the county.

Although Moorpark’s $17.40 monthly trash rate for residents is lower than the county average by more than $2, BFI officials said the fee is still inflated when compared to other Southern California communities.

The fee should be about $13.50, BFI officials said.

The City Council is scheduled to listen to BFI’s sales pitch at its 7 p.m. meeting at Moorpark City Hall.
