The first Earth Day--April 22, 1970--was marked by nationwide demonstrations and political speeches. Here are some local events to mark its 25th anniversary:

* Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will hold an Earth Day Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Call (310) 548-7563.

* Caltech will sponsor its fourth annual Earth Day celebration on the Winnett Quad from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Call (818) 395-6163.

* The Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates will sponsor Earth Day activities in Eaton Canyon on Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Call (818) 794-1987.

* Jet Propulsion Laboratory project scientists will discuss their work in support of NASA’s Mission to Planet Earth at the JPL mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Call (818) 354-0112.

* Kidspace Museum in Pasadena will have an Earth Day Extravaganza! with eco-activities for children including the release of hundreds of butterflies. 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Call (818) 449-9144.

* The Los Angeles Conservation Corps and the TreePeople need volunteers to help plant trees today beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Skid Row area. Call (213) 526-1460.

* Friends of Madrona Marsh will host Earth Day activities for children, speakers from environmental organizations and tree planting at Columbia Park in Torrance from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call (310) 326-3840.

* The Sierra Club will host a four- to six-mile Earth Day hike and picnic at Topanga State Park on Saturday. Meet at the kiosk in the inside parking lot at the Presbyterian Conference Center at Sunset Boulevard and Temescal Canyon at 9:30 a.m. Call (310) 479-5717.

* TreePeople will host an Earth Day Festival in Coldwater Canyon Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Parking at Harvard Westlake School with shuttle service to the site. Call (818) 753-4600.

* The Arroyo Seco Earth Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Pasadena’s Brookside Park south of the Rose Bowl. Call (818) 792-2442.
