Students Cited as ‘Heroes of the Heart’

Students in Brea Olinda High School’s Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan were given “Heroes of the Heart” awards by Children’s Hospital of Orange County for the group’s volunteer work.

Brea’s MEChA students were lauded for donating countless hours on a program involving the delivery of Thanksgiving dinners to needy families, holding car washes and candy sales to raise money for scholarships and helping a poor family make ends meet during the year. The students also offered free after-school tutoring services and gave money to classmates so they could pay for books, clothes, meals and other school supplies.

The hospital also recognized Horace Ensign Intermediate School in Newport Beach for encouraging all its students to participate in community service. Students help Friends and Service to Humanity with fund-raisers, food drives and food deliveries to needy families.

Volunteering “is an important part of a youngster’s education,” Ensign Principal Scott Paulsen said. “If you’re going to survive, you have to help each other.”
