Myers Plays Through Broken Toe

Angel catcher Greg Myers played most of Thursday’s game against the Oakland Athletics with a broken bone in his right big toe--and he didn’t even know it.

X-rays taken after the Angels’ 9-1 victory in Tempe Diablo Stadium revealed the injury, which Myers incurred in the second inning when he fouled a ball off his foot.

“It hurt, but I didn’t think anything of it,” said Myers, who singled and scored in the sixth inning. “It doesn’t even feel that bad now. It’s just kind of numb. Maybe after a few days of rest, we’ll see what happens.”

If Myers is unable to play for an extended period of time, the team probably will recall Jorge Fabregas, who was sent to triple-A Vancouver Tuesday, “or we might have to get someone else,” Manager Marcel Lachemann said.

Andy Allanson, 33, is the Angels’ backup catcher, but asked if he thought Allanson could catch every day, Lachemann said: “That wasn’t really part of the plan.”
