FREE HELP WANTED: Today is the day you don old clothes, grab your paintbrush and head to the nearest park or beach--if you’re among the 10,000 expected to pitch in on the county’s annual Volunteer Day. The county Volunteer Center has enough help and corporate support for nearly 100 different community projects throughout the county. . . . Example: In Santa Ana, volunteers will spruce up the Memorial Recreation Center on Flower Street. . . . If you’d like to volunteer, call (714) 647-2600.

A-24 FOR ARMENIA: With the country’s thoughts already on the tragic losses in Oklahoma City, Orange County’s Armenian community today will look back 80 years, to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Armenians killed under Turkish rule. (B3) At the Armenian Apostolic Church in Santa Ana, members will unveil a 16-foot monument honoring the dead. It’s an Armenian “A” atop the number 24. . . . Says spokeswoman Sylvie Tertzakian: “It stands for April 24, the date we remember what happened. But it also stands for life after tragedy.”

LOVING HIM: There may have been a little cringing among UC Irvine officials when comedian Jon Lovitz recently fondled Jamie Lee Curtis on a televised awards show. But Lovitz, of “Saturday Night Live” fame, is known for shocking humor. He’s still a favorite UCI son. . . . Sunday, he’s among a group who will receive “Distinguished Alumni” awards at the university’s Lauds and Laurels awards ceremony. Lovitz is a 1979 graduate, with a bachelor’s degree in drama.

CIRCLE OF EARTH: Since the Disney people have put Lion King clothes, lunch boxes, posters, kites, T-shirts, hats, books and toys on the market, it’s no surprise that the Earth Day environmental fair they’re sponsoring Sunday is being called “A Jungle Adventure.” The fair, at Peralta Canyon Park in Anaheim, will include 40 information booths, a wildlife art exhibit and a children’s recycled art show. . . . The idea, says spokeswoman Cathy Glasgow, is to get people to be more “Earth-friendly.”
