Leisure World-Seal Beach opened in 1962 as the first planned retirement community of its kind in the nation. Its 8,500 residents now make up about a third of Seal Beach’s population.

In February, the settlement of a lawsuit created a significant change in the way the community treats its younger residents. The agreement reversed Leisure World’s longtime policy that residents under age 55 could not use a variety of facilities including the swimming pool, bus system and golf course.

Now, all permanent residents of the 6,500-unit community have full access to all facilities and programs, regardless of age.
