Crowley Jammed With Anglers for Trout Opener

BISHOP — Crowley Lake, inundated by more than 1,000 RVs, was ice-free and looking for its “best opener in years” when the Eastern Sierra trout season opened at 5:01 a.m. today, an hour before sunrise, Sierra Associates President John Frederickson said Friday.
Because campgrounds above 7,500 feet are closed, anglers have had to seek sites at lower elevations.
“It’s a zoo,” Frederickson said.
Strong winds blew the last ice off June Lake Friday afternoon, but lakes in the Mammoth Basin were frozen and inaccessible by car.
Convict Lake was ice-free; Lake Sabrina, in the Bishop area, was open but frozen, and the pond at Intake II was clear.
