Pull the Plug on the EPA?

I read with interest Paul Dean’s “The Debugging of Electric Cars” (April 21). How about debugging the Environmental Protection Agency, which proposed this harebrained solution to our air pollution problem?

Approximately 80% of our electrical energy is generated by fuel-burning power plants, which contribute about the same amount of pollution as would be contributed by a vehicle that burns it directly.

While a Southern California Edison engineer and his wife are kept awake by the “penetrating, heavy hum of a Honda hybrid sucking up an overnight charge beneath their bedroom window,” the rest of us are listening to our utility bills soaring through the roof.

Californians already pay utility rates 50% higher than the national average. And who is paying for the tinkering with these electric cars that so few of us will ever be able to afford with their price tags of $35,000 to $100,000?

I’ll bet that would be customers. Maybe the Edison folks should take a moment and listen to what we’re hearing--the sound of our money being squandered.
