GOLF ROUNDUP : Hoch Moves Ahead by 5 in Houston

Scott Hoch knows he’s in charge with a five-shot lead heading into today’s final round of the Houston Open, but he’s not entirely comfortable.

“I’m definitely not going to take it too easy,” he said after a three-under-par 69 Saturday extended his advantage over John Cook and rookie Charlie Rymer.

“I’ve got to go out there and play aggressively conservative, or conservatively aggressive. I figure they’re going to have to catch me.”

Hoch had five birdies and two bogeys as he moved into position to take his sixth tour victory and first since he won the Bob Hope Classic more than a year ago.

His 201 total for 54 holes left him at 15 under par at the Tournament Players Course at the Woodlands.

Rocky Thompson took advantage of an early tee time to shoot a seven-under-par 65 and take a one-shot lead over hometown favorite Jim Colbert and defending champion Raymond Floyd going into today’s final round of the Las Vegas Senior Classic.

Thompson shot a 31 on the front side of the Tournament Players Club course at Summerlin and made two more birdies coming in for a nine-under 135 total before winds started gusting to 45 m.p.h.

Colbert, the first-round leader, shot a 71 and Floyd a 70 to stay in position to win the $1-million tournament.

Kris Tschetter, seeking her second tournament title in eight seasons on the LPGA tour, had four bogeys and four birdies en route to an even-par 72 and a one-stroke lead over Val Skinner after three rounds of the $1.2-million Sprint Championship at Daytona Beach, Fla.
