COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Beat Nevada to End Three-Game Skid

Jason Giambi, Joe Fraser and D.C. Olsen each hit home runs as top-ranked Cal State Fullerton snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Nevada in Big West Conference baseball Saturday in Reno.

Giambi hit his fourth home run in the first, Fraser hit his fifth in the second and Olsen his 10th in the fifth as the Titans built a 4-1 lead.

Fraser added a run-scoring groundout in the sixth before Cal State Fullerton (40-9, 14-3) withstood a late rally by the Wolfpack.

Tim Dixon (10-0) gave up two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings and Mark Kotsay pitched the final two innings to earn his ninth save.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 6-2, Cal Baptist 5-1--Brett Waslefsky singled to right in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run in the second game for Concordia. With two games remaining in the conference season, the Eagles (18-26, 8-14) trail fourth-place Westmont (10-12 in conference) by two games in the race for the final playoff spot.

Biola 7-6, Southern California College 2-4--The Vanguards (13-35, 7-17) lost their final conference games and are assured of finishing last. Biola (8-14) is still in the running for a playoff spot.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 6-1, Concordia 2-2--Shannon Saylor pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts in the first game to clinch the Vanguards’ third consecutive conference championship. SCC is 39-18, 16-4.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 12-10, Whittier 0-2--Christi Guidorizzi (22-4) pitched a one-hitter in the first game, striking out nine, and Lisa Cancilla was six for seven with nine runs batted in and five runs scored for the Panthers (37-5).

In the Big West men’s tennis championships:

UC Irvine 4, Pacific 1--Marc Tardif defeated Ole Olson, 6-4, 7-5, Fred Bach defeated Joe Gonzales, 7-5, 6-3, and Julian Foxon beat Mauricio Sovero, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to lead the Anteaters in the semifinal victory.

In the Big West women’s tennis championships:

Cal State Fullerton 5, UC Irvine 3--Christa Hanson defeated Nina Basica, 7-6, 6-2, in singles and joined Kara Kolb to beat Janet Johnson and Rachel Buenviaje in doubles, 6-3, 6-3, to help the Titans finish seventh.
