VENTURA : Beach Party Draws 15,000 Despite Cold

Despite foggy and cool weather, an estimated 15,000 party-goers attended the second and final day of the 10th annual California Beach Party on Ventura’s promenade Sunday, officials said.

The two-day total for the yearly municipal rite that welcomes spring and the start of the tourist season topped 30,000 attendees--up about 10,000 people from last year’s event, said Andrea Windle, a city spokeswoman.

City officials had anticipated that as many as 50,000 people would crowd the mile-long promenade that runs from the newly reopened Ventura Pier to Surfers Point--perusing art and classic-car exhibits while enjoying the sounds of several different rock bands and a wide selection of food booths.

Given the lack of sunny weather, event organizers said they were still satisfied with the attendance.

“We’re pleased with the turnout,” Windle said. “We could have had better weather, but people really seemed to be enjoying themselves, and that’s the important thing.”

Windle also said the party remained peaceful, with Ventura police making no event-related arrests through early Sunday evening.
