Ford Recalls Cars for Tank, Seat Defects : Safety: Three of the company’s ’95 luxury sedans as well as ’94 Mustangs are involved. No injuries have been reported.

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it is recalling 112,000 of its 1995 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars to correct a potential fuel tank fire hazard.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based auto maker also said it is recalling 61,000 of its 1994 Mustang GT coupes to correct a potential electrical fire hazard involving the cars’ power front seat wiring harnesses.

Ford said that in some of the Crown Victorias, Grand Marquis and Town Cars, the connection between the fuel filler pipe and the fuel tank may not be properly sealed, allowing fuel seepage when the tank is full or nearly full.

The condition could result in a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Ford said it has received 15 reports of fuel odor or seepage. However, there have been no reports of fire or injury. About 3,900 of the cars involved in the recall are in Canada.

Dealers will replace the fuel tank seal at no charge. The operation takes about an hour, Ford said.

In a separate action, Ford is recalling the 61,000 Mustang GTs to prevent an electrical short from developing in the wiring harnesses of the cars’ front seat power lumbar support mechanisms.

The electrical short could generate heat, producing a fire hazard that could damage the foam seat cushion and produce smoke. Ford said it has received eight reports of that occurring, but no reports of injuries.

About 3,100 of the Mustangs involved in the action are in Canada. The service, to be performed by dealers, is expected to take an hour, Ford said.
